The scent library

The scent library

Eight scents, numbered 00 to 07. A scent keeps its number whatever form it takes, oil, melt, reed or cone, so once you have found yours it is easy to find again.

How to choose

Start with what you already like. If you are drawn to woods, try 00 Signature or 07 Palo Santo. If you buy flowers for the house, 05 Neroli & Tuberose or 06 Rose & Cardamom. For something green, 01 Fig & Cedar or 02 Cut Grass & Mint, and for something sunny or fruity, 03 Mimosa & Honey or 04 Wild Berry & Bergamot. Still not sure? The Incense Discovery Set holds six scents, eight cones of each, and the Marble Incense Dish Set holds all eight.

Fig, iris, cedar shavings, rose petals, cardamom and orange blossom on travertine

Scent 00

Signature

Pink pepper and peony, over sandalwood and pine.

Scent 00, the first in the library. It opens bright and a little peppery, softens into peony, then settles on warm sandalwood with a green thread of pine running underneath.

Notes
  • pink pepper
  • peony
  • sandalwood
  • pine
Family
spiced, floral, woody
Moment
Early evening, the first lamp on, a coat still over the back of a chair.

Scent 01

Fig & Cedar

Green fig leaf and powdery iris, on dry cedar.

A fig leaf rubbed between your fingers, sharp and milky at once. Iris makes it soft and slightly powdery, and cedarwood gives it a dry base, like the inside of a pencil drawer.

Notes
  • green fig leaf
  • iris
  • cedarwood
Family
green, powdery, woody
Moment
A study after lunch, pencils sharpened, a stack of paper on the desk.

Scent 02

Cut Grass & Mint

Cut grass and spearmint, rounded with magnolia.

The first mow of the year, drifting in through an open window. Spearmint keeps it cool and bright, and a little magnolia rounds it off so it never turns sharp.

Notes
  • cut grass
  • spearmint
  • magnolia
Family
fresh, green
Moment
Windows open, a bowl of fruit on the table, a weekday morning.

Scent 03

Mimosa & Honey

Mimosa and peony, with a thread of manuka honey.

Yellow mimosa in a pitcher on the kitchen table, early in the year when the light starts coming back. Peony keeps it soft, and manuka honey adds a warm, slightly waxy sweetness underneath.

Notes
  • mimosa
  • peony
  • manuka honey
Family
soft, sunny floral
Moment
A bright Saturday, laundry on the line, the radio on low.

Scent 04

Wild Berry & Bergamot

Blackberry and bergamot, lifted by osmanthus.

Blackberries picked at the end of summer, fingers stained purple. Bergamot keeps the fruit sharp rather than jammy, and osmanthus adds a soft note of apricot skin that lingers.

Notes
  • blackberry
  • bergamot
  • osmanthus
Family
fruity, bright
Moment
A September evening, a pie in the oven, friends on their way over.

Scent 05

Neroli & Tuberose

Orange blossom and tuberose, with magnolia beneath.

White flowers in warm sun. Orange blossom comes first, bright and slightly bitter, then the fuller tuberose. Magnolia smooths the edges, so it stays bright without turning shrill.

Notes
  • orange blossom
  • tuberose
  • magnolia
Family
bright white floral
Moment
A steamy bathroom after a long shower, white towels, the mirror fogged.

Scent 06

Rose & Cardamom

Rose petals and jasmine, warmed with cardamom.

A rose that smells of the petals, not the perfume counter. Jasmine makes it fuller, and green cardamom gives it a quiet spice, like a pod cracked open over a pot of rice.

Notes
  • rose petals
  • jasmine
  • cardamom
Family
rosy, lightly spiced
Moment
A Sunday night, the bath running, one lamp turned down low.

Scent 07

Palo Santo

Palo santo wood with bergamot and dry sage.

Palo santo is a pale, resinous wood with a sweet, faintly smoky smell. We pair it with bergamot for brightness and a little dry sage, so it stays warm without getting heavy.

Notes
  • palo santo wood
  • bergamot
  • sage
Family
warm, resinous, woody
Moment
Late, the house quiet, a sweater on and the heat clicking off.
